Is pepper spray legal in Massachusetts? (No license needed)

Yes — adults 18 and over can buy and carry self-defence spray in Massachusetts without any firearms license. That changed in 2014 and a lot of the advice still floating around online is out of date. Here's the current position, and where the limits actually are.

The rule in one line

Before 2014, Massachusetts required an FID card to carry pepper spray, which put it in the odd position of being one of the only states where a non-lethal defensive tool needed a firearms license. The law was changed so that adults no longer need one.

Who still needs a license

• Under 18: a minor generally needs an FID card to possess self-defence spray. This is the main remaining license requirement.
• Prohibited persons: the same categories of person who cannot lawfully possess a firearm — felony convictions, active restraining orders and so on — are also barred from possessing self-defence spray.

Where to buy it

Massachusetts requires self-defence spray to be sold by licensed dealers rather than by any general retailer, which is why you'll find it at gun shops and some pharmacies but not in the aisle at every big-box store. Buying it online and having it shipped into Massachusetts is where people get into trouble — many national retailers won't ship here, and the ones that do may not be complying with state rules.

• It takes seconds to work. Plan to use the time to leave, not to stand and watch.
• Practice matters. Most people have never taken the safety off theirs. Buy an inert practice canister and try it once — the first time should not be the real time.
• It expires. Check the date on the canister; propellant fades.
