A Fitchburg Convenience Store, a Gun, and a Lucky Traffic Stop
A Fitchburg Cumberland Farms was robbed on a Tuesday night. A routine traffic stop in Leominster the next morning turned up a loaded gun and the suspect.

The break in the case came fast and almost by accident. The next morning, state troopers pulled over a car in a Leominster parking lot for a missing front license plate. The Daily Voice reported that the driver was seen frantically reaching around the front seat as troopers approached.
In a fanny pack the driver was wearing, troopers found a loaded handgun fitted with a laser sight, along with a mask and clothing, according to police. He faced firearm and other charges, with armed robbery charges pending, while a passenger who gave a false name slipped away before being identified.

Cumberland Farms is about as Massachusetts as it gets — the place you stop for coffee on the way to work or milk on the way home. The clerk working that Tuesday night shift in Fitchburg was doing what thousands of people across Central Mass do every evening. And the arrest details are their own lesson: the person who did this was allegedly driving around the next day with a loaded, laser-sighted handgun in a fanny pack.

People who plan crimes skip all of that. The Massachusetts licensing system — strict as it is — exists for everyone else: the clerk, the commuter, the parent who wants to be trained, vetted, and lawful. Those two groups have nothing in common, and the system is designed to keep it that way.
