A woman met an online buyer at the Natick Mall to sell a $27,000 diamond. He grabbed it and dragged her to the ground before bystanders stopped him.

During the meet-up, police said, the man snatched the diamond and bolted. The seller held on — at one point gripping his leg as he tried to run — and was dragged across the concrete, leaving her with cuts and bruises that were later treated at a hospital.
Two bank employees working at the mall ran over and, along with Natick police, wrestled the man to the ground. Security cameras captured the whole encounter. The suspect pleaded not guilty in Framingham District Court and was held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.

Letting go of a $27,000 diamond feels unthinkable until you're being dragged across concrete — the moment something is violently taken, the safest move is almost always to release it, create distance, and be the best witness police ever had. Cameras and bystanders did their job here; her injuries came from the struggle itself.
For high-value sales, there's a better protocol many people don't know: several Massachusetts police departments, including in MetroWest, offer their lobbies as safe-exchange zones. Awareness and planning like that are the real first line of defense. It's the same mindset we build in every class we teach — think ahead, avoid the fight, and treat any physical confrontation as the last resort, not the plan.
