Chased Through Downtown Crossing in the Middle of the Afternoon
A 19-year-old was chased and beaten by a group at Downtown Crossing on a Sunday afternoon, losing his phone, ID, and debit cards.

When he got off at Downtown Crossing, the group chased him onto an escalator, knocked him down, and beat him before taking his cellphone, identification, and debit cards.
Police used the phone's tracking feature and surveillance footage to locate the group a short distance away near Blackstone Street. Six people from New Hampshire were arrested and charged, including with unarmed robbery and assault and battery, according to the report.
The Suffolk District Attorney called it a brazen daytime attack in the middle of the city. The victim survived; the charges were allegations as the case moved through court.

Getting singled out by a group in a crowd is a uniquely helpless feeling precisely because you assume the crowd protects you. It usually does. This time it didn't, and everything of value this young man carried was gone in under a minute.

A group attack is one situation where we're blunt in class: there is no clever answer once it starts. Numbers beat almost everything. The work happens earlier — reading a group's attention on the platform, changing cars, staying near staff and cameras, putting distance and exits between you and trouble. Situational awareness isn't fear; it's the same skill defensive drivers use, applied to a train platform.
