How to renew your Massachusetts LTC

When to apply, what it costs, and whether you need to take the class again.

A Massachusetts LTC runs six years. Renewal is the same application to the same department — and the single most important thing is starting early, because there is a protection that only applies if you file before your license expires.

Start at least 90 days out

Massachusetts provides a safety net: if you file a renewal application before your current license expires, your license generally remains valid while the department processes the renewal, so you don't fall into a gap. Miss the expiry date and you lose that protection — and an expired license means you no longer have the legal basis to possess the firearms you already own.

Departments are slow at renewals for the same reasons they're slow at new applications: appointment availability and background checks. Three months of runway is comfortable; six is better if you live in a busy city.

If your license has already expired

Don't wait, and don't assume it's simple. Talk to your department immediately about how they want you to proceed, and in the meantime make sure your firearms are stored exactly as the law requires. Depending on how long it has lapsed, you may be treated as a new applicant — which can mean the safety course again.

Worth doing at renewal: get current

Six years is a long time between range visits for most license holders. If your last live fire was the class that got you licensed, renewal week is a good excuse to fix that. Concealed Carry 1 covers drawing from concealment, transition drills and the law of deadly force — for people who hold the license but have never trained beyond the basics.

Do I need to take the safety course again?
Generally no — the state-approved course is a condition of getting licensed the first time, not of renewing. Your department is the authority on their own process, so confirm when you book.
How early can I file?
Departments typically accept renewals well ahead of the expiry date. Start about 90 days out; there's no advantage to waiting.
Can I carry while the renewal is pending?
If you filed before expiry, your license generally remains in effect during processing. File late and you lose that protection.
I've moved towns since I was licensed. What now?
Your licensing authority is the department where you now live. They handle the renewal.
Do I need the Multi course to add states at renewal?
The other states' licenses are separate from your Massachusetts renewal. If you now travel and want them, the 39 State Multi course covers all six in one four-to-five-hour visit — and if you took your original class with us, call for the returning-student rate.
What we do and don't do. We teach the state-approved class and the law Massachusetts requires you to complete before you apply. Applying is your own step with your own police department; we are not part of it. This guide is general information, not legal advice — the licensing authority and the statute are the final word.
