Followed From a Hyannis ATM and Robbed in a Public Parking Lot
A 59-year-old Hyannis man withdrew cash at a Main Street ATM, was followed to a parking lot, and robbed at gunpoint. Police arrested a suspect a day later.

In the Town Hall parking lot nearby, the man produced a firearm and robbed the resident of the cash he had just withdrawn, police said, before fleeing the area.
Barnstable police identified the suspect, a Chatham man, and obtained a warrant for armed robbery, assault with a dangerous weapon, and larceny. The next afternoon, the Cape Cod SWAT team arrested him at a Chatham residence without incident, CapeCod.com reported, and he was ordered held without bail at his arraignment. The victim was not physically hurt.

It was midday, on Main Street in Hyannis, at the ATM plenty of locals use, and it started with what looked like a stranger being helpful. That is what makes this one uncomfortable: the victim did nothing unusual. Withdrawing cash and walking to a municipal parking lot in daylight is about as routine as errands get, for a 59-year-old or anyone else.
The reality most of us never see coming.

The risk window is not the machine, it is the walk away from it, and someone hovering close enough to 'help' is someone close enough to see your cash and your direction of travel. Step away, decline help politely, and pay attention to who leaves when you do. Those habits cost nothing.
