A Taunton Clerk Fought for the Knife When a Robber Demanded Cash
A robber with a large knife demanded money from a Taunton gas station clerk in 2022. The clerk fought back, and the robber was later sent to prison.

The clerk refused, and the two struggled over the weapon. In the fight, the clerk managed to wrestle the knife away and turn it on his attacker. Both men were hurt. Even then, the robber tried to swing a metal display rack at the clerk before fleeing with a cash register drawer.
Police identified the suspect through surveillance footage and tips that came in over social media, and evidence at his home matched the robbery. In August 2023, the 39-year-old pleaded guilty to armed robbery and assault charges in Fall River Superior Court and was sentenced to four and a half to six years in state prison. The clerk recovered.

Gas station counters are staffed by ordinary people on ordinary shifts, students, parents working a second job, folks a few feet from the coffee machine you use every morning. This clerk had a knife pulled on him over the contents of a register. He survived a fight he never asked for. Anyone who has ever worked a register, or stood in line at one, understands how close that danger sits to daily life.
The reality most of us never see coming.

What we tell our students.
We will never second-guess someone who survived an attack. The clerk made a split-second choice under threat, and he went home. But our instructors are honest with students: a physical fight over a weapon is the most dangerous scenario there is, and everything we teach is aimed at never being in one. Awareness, distance, and de-escalation come first, always. Force, in any form, is a last resort when there is no other way to protect a life.
