They Met an Online Buyer in Cambridge. He Brought a Gun.
Twice in one Cambridge holiday weekend, sellers who arranged online sales met their buyer in person and were robbed at gunpoint of the merchandise.
Scene imagery is illustrative — not the actual locationOver Thanksgiving weekend 2024, Cambridge police responded to three armed robberies in a matter of days. Two of them followed the same script: a resident arranged online to sell an item and agreed to meet the buyer in person near Elm Street, in the area of the Cambridgeport School.
In the first incident, on the Friday, the supposed buyer showed a handgun and fled with the merchandise, running off with two other people. The next day, in the same area, it happened again: another seller, another meetup, another handgun, another stolen item. No one was physically hurt in either robbery.
On the Sunday night, police responded to a third armed robbery, which they described as unrelated; two juveniles were arrested and charged. Police said they were working to determine whether the weekend's incidents were connected.

Selling something online is about as universal as errands get, half of us have a listing up right now. The victims did what the apps are built for: agreed on a price, picked a spot in a residential neighborhood, and showed up. A school, a familiar street, a weekend afternoon. The setting was fine. The other party wasn't.
The reality most of us never see coming.

What we tell our students.
The cheapest safety upgrade in this story costs nothing: control the meetup. Daylight, a busy public place, ideally a police station's designated exchange zone, and never alone. If a buyer pushes back on those terms, that is your answer. Avoidance like this is the first thing we teach, because the best defensive encounter is the one that never starts.
Beyond that, incidents in familiar neighborhoods are usually what push people from "someday" to actually learning. If that is where you are, start with education: what the License to Carry is, what Massachusetts law expects, whether you would even qualify. The class qualifies you, it satisfies the state's training requirement so you can apply, and the knowledge is valuable even if you never buy a firearm.
