A Falmouth Bank Robbery Ended With a Customer's Car Stolen
A man robbed a Falmouth bank at gunpoint on a Saturday morning in April 2023, claiming to have a bomb, then fled in a customer's stolen car.

The teller complied and handed over an undisclosed amount of cash. On his way out, the robber stole a customer's vehicle and drove off. Police found the car abandoned a short distance away, and investigators released surveillance images asking the public for help identifying him.
The case did not stay cold. According to later CapeCod.com reporting, a suspect was charged that summer, pleaded guilty to the armed robbery, and in early 2024 was sentenced to more than eight years in prison. No one at the bank was physically injured.

Saturday morning banking is a chore shared by half the Cape, deposit a check, grab coffee, get on with the weekend. The customers in that branch, and the one whose car was taken from the lot, were doing exactly that. A bank on Route 28 with cameras everywhere feels like one of the safest stops on your list, and for a few minutes that morning it was not.

What we tell our students.
The teller's calm compliance is the textbook response, and it is the first thing we would point out to any class: in a robbery, cooperation protects lives, and everything in that bank was insured and replaceable. A firearm in a crowded lobby is nobody's answer, and Massachusetts use-of-force law is emphatic that deadly force exists to protect life, not money.
What people take from a story like this is quieter: the understanding that random violence touches ordinary errands, and that preparedness is mostly mental, awareness, exits, staying calm.
