And the first thing many of them learn is that Massachusetts licensing is stricter and more confusing than they assumed, and that plenty of people aren't sure whether they'd even qualify.

The required class qualifies you, meaning it satisfies the state's training requirement so you can apply, and just as importantly it covers use-of-force law, safe storage, and when a firearm is not the answer. That knowledge is worth having whether or not you ever buy one.
