A Masked, Armed Man Broke Into a Barnstable Home on July 4th
On the morning of July 4, 2022, a masked man with a rifle broke into a Barnstable home. A regional SWAT response ended with his arrest.

It was the kind of holiday morning when Cape neighborhoods are full of families setting up cookouts.
The response was massive: Barnstable police were joined by officers from Dennis and Yarmouth and the Cape Cod Regional SWAT team. The 29-year-old suspect, a Dennisport man who police said was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor at the time, was taken into custody.
Detectives recovered a semi-automatic .22 caliber rifle and a magazine loaded with 21 rounds, Barnstable Patch reported. The man was charged with home invasion, assault, and firearms violations, and a judge ordered him held without bail after his arraignment in Barnstable District Court.

July 4th on Cape Cod is bikes in driveways and grills on decks. A masked intruder with a rifle at 10 in the morning does not fit anyone's picture of that day, which is exactly the point. Home invasions do not check the calendar. The families on that street were living one of the most ordinary mornings of the year when their neighborhood filled with SWAT vehicles.

Our students are often surprised to learn how much of this risk sits outside anyone's control, you do not get to choose the day or the intruder. What you control is preparation: strong entry points, a household plan, and the decision, made calmly and lawfully, about whether trained firearm ownership belongs in your layers of protection.
