A Gunpoint Robbery on Blue Hill Avenue Didn't Go as Planned
A suspect tried to rob a man at gunpoint on Blue Hill Avenue early on Jan. 2. The victim managed to disarm him, and the suspect fled.

During the confrontation, the victim managed to disarm the suspect, who then fled the scene. Police later made contact with the victim on nearby Greenwood Street.
No injuries were reported. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made and Boston police were working to identify the suspect.

He came out of it unhurt, and the robber left empty-handed, but nobody standing at that corner would have predicted which way those thirty seconds would go.

What we tell our students.
This one ended well, and we're glad it did. But our instructors would caution against reading it as a strategy. Wrestling over a firearm is a coin flip no trainer would ever tell you to bet on — the safest outcomes in armed robberies overwhelmingly come from compliance, distance, and being a good witness. When someone survives by fighting back, that's fortune favoring them in a moment they never chose.
What you can choose is what you do before and after. Awareness on a dark sidewalk — earbuds out, head up, noticing who's near you — prevents more robberies than any struggle ever will. And if a morning like this one convinces you to take preparedness seriously, remember that in Massachusetts the lawful path runs through training and a months-long licensing process.
