A Gas Station Attendant, an Angry Stranger, and an Open Knife
A man holding an open knife confronted a Marlborough gas station attendant at 10 p.m. over a card dispute. The attendant handed over $100 to end it.

According to court documents reported by the Community Advocate, the man rushed in holding an open knife and came within two feet of the attendant, yelling that the station had taken his money.
The dispute, police said, traced back to a routine $125 pre-authorization hold on the man's card from a gas purchase a few hours earlier — the kind of temporary charge that happens at pumps everywhere. The attendant told police he was afraid he was going to be stabbed.
To end the confrontation, the attendant handed over $100 from his own wallet, and the man left. Police identified a suspect through the car's registration and surveillance video, and he was arraigned on an armed robbery charge in Marlborough District Court.

What we tell our students.
Our instructors spend a lot of class time on exactly this kind of situation, and the lesson may surprise you: the attendant did the right thing. He de-escalated, he complied, and he went home safe. No amount of property is worth a fight with an armed person at arm's length. Real defensive training is mostly about judgment — reading a situation early, creating distance, and knowing that a firearm is a last resort, never a first response.
What stays with people is the randomness. You cannot schedule the moment somebody else loses control.
