A Fall River market clerk chasing a shoplifter was ambushed outside by two men and sprayed with mace. A bystander stepped in and the pair fled.

The clerk chased her outside to get the merchandise back. Waiting there were two men. In the struggle that followed, one of them sprayed the clerk in the face with mace.
A bystander who knew the clerk saw what was happening, got out of his vehicle, and moved in to help, and the attackers took off on foot. Fall River police reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses, and the investigation led to the arrest of two suspects, ages 27 and 37. Both were charged with armed robbery. The clerk was not seriously hurt.

This started as the pettiest crime imaginable, a pack of cigarettes, on a weekday afternoon on a busy Fall River street. Within seconds it was a two-on-one assault on a sidewalk. Small-business workers deal with shoplifting constantly, and most of the time it ends with an eye roll and a police report. The lesson is how fast the ordinary version turns into the dangerous one, in daylight, in public.
The reality most of us never see coming.

What we tell our students.
Two things stand out to our instructors here. First, what happened outside that door is why we teach people to let property go. The moment you leave the store behind a thief, you are walking into a situation you cannot see, and this clerk was ambushed by people he did not know were there. Awareness of what is around the corner beats courage every time.
Second, notice the math of it: the whole assault took seconds, and no police response on earth arrives in seconds. That is not a criticism of police, it is just physics. It is also why preparedness, starting with awareness and a plan, is a personal responsibility long before it is ever about any tool.
