An Elderly Woman Was Robbed at Gunpoint on a Charlestown Street
Two masked teens robbed an elderly woman of her purse at gunpoint on a Charlestown corner in daylight. Neighbors helped police find them.

Neighbors stepped up immediately. One spotted the suspects and pointed officers to them; another found the woman's purse in a backyard and tracked her down to return it and make sure she was all right.
Police arrested an 18-year-old and a 14-year-old nearby and said the victim's credit card was found during booking. They faced charges including armed robbery of an elderly person — allegations, as the case went to court. The woman was not reported injured. One neighbor told CBS Boston she couldn't believe it would happen in their community.

Charlestown's gaslit streets around the Monument are the kind of place people specifically choose for their parents or their retirement. This happened there, in daylight, to a woman doing the most ordinary thing in the world — walking with her purse. The heartening part is the neighbors: within minutes, strangers were helping police and checking on her.

That's the tension most of our students are wrestling with when they walk into our Everett classroom — they don't live in fear, but they've stopped assuming their zip code is a plan.
